The governments’ new Careers Strategy, published in December 2017, and statutory guidance for school leaders and school staff, published in January 2018, set out the plan for building a high-quality careers system that will help young people to achieve’.

The Gatsby Charitable Foundation (http://www.gatsby.org.uk/) has provided schools with a clear blueprint of what good careers provision should look like.

Leicester College Careers Team offer to schools
Leicester College Careers Team are able to offer years 7 -11, impartial careers advice and guidance through topical presentations and classroom based activities. The offer aims to enhance students’ knowledge and awareness of different career options, opportunities and support their careers education programme in line with the Government Careers Strategy and Gatsby Career Benchmarks. There is no cost attached to this service for schools. Sessions can be delivered in two formats: 15 -30 minute assembly presentation or 30 -60 minute classroom based workshop, to include a presentation and activity. Both formats are available in the following topics:
- 21st Century Careers, The Future of Work, Introduction to LMI
Introduce students to the changing world of work, to discover what jobs will look like in the future and gain an understanding of Post 16 options, including higher education, as well as understand what skills will be in greatest demand and identify what employers look for.
- Social Media and Your Online Reputation
An insight into how social media can help shape an individual’s online reputation and how the online image can affect employment and University entry opportunities. How to create a positive online reputation, what creates a negative online reputation and also cover social media privacy.
- Apprenticeships - An Introduction
Provide students with an insight into the diverse range of apprenticeship opportunities at all levels including university level. Students will understand the benefits and value of undertaking an apprenticeship and will be aware of how to make an application.
- Skills for the Future (popular with Year 7 and 8 students)
Students will discover skills for future jobs, know what skills and qualities employers look for, understand the meaning of ‘Transferable Skills’
- Girls into STEAM
An understanding of the term STEAM, explore a range of 21st Century STEAM careers, discover the benefits of a career in STEAM as well as learn about different routes into STEAM

Leicester college for apprenticeships have got several salons in your areas who are looking for hairdressing apprentices for this summer. Suitable for any year 11 learners, the course equivalent to 5 GCSE, Maths and English level 4 is desirable not essential.

Wigston College Apprenticeship Vacancy Evening, April 8 (open to all 16+, 18+ leavers across schools, 6th forms etc.) Wigston College are having an Apprenticeship Vacancy Evening (3.15pm-6.00pm) on April 8 2019, with a number of local employers and a range of level 2 and level 3 apprenticeships suitable for schools and college leavers. Please do encourage your students to attend, this event is open to all 16+ and 18+ leavers….they could end up moving smoothly into the workplace as many employers there will have current vacancies suitable for leavers. They don’t have to register – just come along! A big thanks to Wigston College for leading on this.
Nylacast (Thurmaston area) have an open evening next week on April 10, they have 12 apprenticeship vacancies (8 CNC Engineering Apprentices (Milling and Turning) • 1 Electrical Maintenance Apprentice • 1 Warehouse & Despatch Apprentice • 1 Purchasing Apprentice • 1 Engineering Production Admin Apprentice). Nylacast appreciate that school leavers may not fully understand an engineering environment, therefore would like to invite anyone who might be interested in applying along to have a look around and talk to some of their staff as well as existing and former apprentices. Spaces are limited, so booking a place is essential. Parents/Guardians are more than welcome.
